Rain Coat - 2015 Planned Parenthood Condom Couture

Planned Parenthood Charlotte organized their first annual Condom Couture fundraiser event, following in the Nationwide trend. A handful of local artists were asked to create a wearable piece for this show. The condoms were provided for, 1000 condoms were given to each of the artists and designers for their outfit. When I finally got my choice, I saw that they came in rows of 10 condoms, with perforations where to tear the. The packaging alone was very cool so I decided to remove the condoms carefully by slicing the top layer of one side of each package and removing the contents, just in case I had time to do something else with the wrappers. After creating my fuchsia and black dress I was left with plenty of time to make something else. I thought a coat would look marvelous, so I sewed the rows of wrappers with my sewing machine and used duct tape to reinforce the piece for every perforation wanted to come apart after i sewed it together. I thought black piping would accent the whole thing so I sewed ribbed ribbon along the edge of the coat and finished the sleeves with black duct tape. While making the coat I was inspired to make the hat and there it is. My favorite piece. It's simplicity is quite elegant.
