Silicone Girl was an idea that started formulating in my head back in 2014 when I took apart a computer key board to get the keys for a friend. I took the rest of the keyboard apart just out of curiosity and came upon this amazing silicone, so cool to the touch, so interesting in it’s dimensionality and texture. I was working with the Habitat for Humanity Restore at the time and they kept getting used discarded keyboards which they didn’t resell so instead of tossing them they gave them to me. I had to take apart about 100 keyboards to get enough product to make the dress. All keyboards had different silicone pads, some were thin plastic sheets with silicone bubbles, some had not sheets at all, just individual bubbles under each letter and some had tinted padding. Taking apart the keyboards was a challenge, most have somewhere between 4 to 40 minuscule screws to open the board. Most were disgustingly dirty. The biggest challenge was in coming up with a way to assemble this dress. Silicone is a soft and durable yet very fickle and delicate, I could not sew it or staple it, it tore like paper. I could not burn or heat melt, it burns like paper and heat resistant. No glue can touch it nor take can stick… I resorted to applying it to some fabric with grommets and treat it very carefully, this dress is very delicate .
