Magnum Turquoise - coiled paper sculpture

This was one of my first large coiled vessel experiments, I chose to create this coiled vessel on a paper mache' shell for sturdiness, and shellacked the inside with turquoise oil gauche to to create the starburst effect.

The process of coiling is a long one, first I cut paper into strips, twirl each strip into a straw like shape, flatten them and then coil each of them into different size coil. This is an extremely time consuming process, but the end result is priceless and inspiring as you can see from the images. The paper mache` is made from recycled paper I collect and make my own paste to assemble the whole thing. Usually when the piece is this large the mache part of it has to be done in different stages because paper macheing is ficke and it has a tendency to pucker and wrinkle.
